Empower Youth Academy (who we are)
Empower Youth Academy is a local registered charity (1139613) and non-profit voluntary organisation run by professionals and students with a passion for education and development. Our goal is to provide children from all backgrounds with equal educational and aspirational opportunities. We are bound to the charity commission and so work with complete transparency. Med Success (what we do)
Set up in 2010 by with support from Empower Youth Academy, Med Success was envisioned as a one-day preparatory seminar to equip aspiring medicine applicants with the best skills and knowledge in generating a successful application to medical school. It was also created with the aim of providing more accessible help to students that may not be able to attend longer medical school preparation events, for logistical or financial reasons.
Med Success provides a variety of activities and experiences to equip prospective medical students with the knowledge and insight to better understand not only the medical school applications process, but also life as a medical student and beyond. We deliver information in lectures packed with professional insight, along with seminars regarding medical ethics and a one-on-one personal statement clinic to help structure a new personal statement, or maybe make tweaks to your current one. Every student has been offered an individual mock interview as part of the day, one of the cornerstones of the event. While the length of the day has remained the same throughout, content has been frequently updated to reflect the changing face of medicine application processes. For example, in 2016 the mock interview station was changed to a multiple mini-interview style, to better reflect what students are now more likely to face in real interview scenarios.
The team is composed of a mixture of medical students and doctors, supported by a large number of senior medical student and doctor volunteers on an annual basis. This allows us to run individual interviews and one-to-one personal statement clinics, providing the kind of detailed insight on a personal basis which is often so hard to find anywhere else. The mixture of students and doctors gives prospective applicants insight into not only getting into medical school, but also what they might face in their careers in both the relatively recent and distant futures.
Why we do it
From the outset, a central tenet of Med Success was the notion that nobody should let their circumstance restrict their prospects. We have always strived to improve the chances of students from underprivileged backgrounds, in particular, proven by our record of charging far less than any other medical school preparation course.
This year we have taken that one step further and made the event free for everyone. We hope to continue our mantra of providing equal opportunity for all prospective doctors of the future, irrespective of their background.
